The NQG Pocket Park Project was the first major collaborative undertaking for the Smart Green Scheme. Manchester based community group, Northern Quarter Greening (NQG) worked with Levels 1, 2 & 3 Art & Graphic Design students to rejuvenate the pocket park by giving the mural on the site a fresh lick of paint and burst of creativity. Students across all levels will be worked together to come up with a unique design that will reflect the spirit of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, famous for its alternative arts scene.

Northern Quarter Greening’s philosophy is to make Manchester a brighter, greener and more enjoyable place for its residents and visitors to live, work and play. During the course of the project, our students will learn about how sustainable principles such as these can help to bring communities together and encourage people to appreciate the spaces that surround them, and inject a small amount of joy in the lives of the people that encounter the space that has been lovingly created by members of the NQG.
On 7th June 2014, the mural was unveiled and artists, staff and residents were invited to enjoy a feast of locally sourced, organic sandwiches and cakes. We also sold bags of fresh spinach and plants that had been grown by Wigan & Leigh College's very own horticulture students for donations and picked by the Students' Unions fair hands!

We think that our students will do the bohemians proud!
