You may have heard us go on about something called the “Green Impact Workbook” this is something we’ve been working towards as a Students Union since September 2014 and golly gee whizz, we’ve submitted it, ticked it off and now we’re waiting…
We were ambitious and went for Gold. First up, let us explain a bit about what it was and why we chose to do it;
“Green Impact provides a practical framework (achievable, quantifiable actions in an online workbook format) for greening students’ unions, covering actions around waste, travel, procurement, biodiversity, energy use, and student engagement.”
So as well as being a Green Students’ Union, we decided to be a part of this workbook too, this has meant we have been getting loads of you involved in lots of green projects. This has included improving Wigan and Leigh Colleges’ biodiversity, running upcycling workshops, sharing fairtrade tasters with you and getting you out and about looking for and pointing out wasted energy.
We’ve also been asking you about what you love, and letting you know how these things could be affected by climate change. And advising you on practical, creative ways in which you could reduce your carbon footprint.

Rachel Mather our Finance Officer said of the project; "The Green Impact Workbook was a lot of fun to complete as everyone had to work as a team and it highlighted issues that we may have never known that we could change! I wanted to do the workbook as I wanted to learn more about green issues in the college and how we can overcome these. I really enjoyed seeing how passionate everyone was about green issues and going out into the college to see what we could change to make it more sustainable."
We’re going for Gold. Well Green gold. We think you should too!
